[Feature] Basement Gigs and Music Prigs

‘Tracks with memories’

Rediscovering old tracks is one of the best feelings in the world – read into my empty joyless life as much as you want with that one. Nevertheless, I imagine getting that vivid trip down memory lane is just as good for the rest of you. You know those tracks that remind you of specific people, events or massive benders at festivals? Whether good or bad, they’re awesome.

I just got back from 2008. Stuck in an empty, dark and quintessentially shit student house. Uni was off for Christmas but lil’ old me had shifts at the climbing wall for another fortnight. Amongst socially unacceptable levels of solitary drinking I managed to drag my carcass around to a few gig venues nearby. If I hadn’t managed to leave and been stuck in a drunken stupor I’d'a missed out on going to a couple of the best intimate gigs I’ve ever been to – even if part of the deal was to tolerate the overtly opinionated, winding yammerings of a pitchfork “reviewer” (read: blogger)  for most of one night.

Vessels were on at the Brudnell Social Club. Having never heard or seen them before might have helped me get a little bit blown away. The whole band upped and switched instruments mid-way through a song – which was nothing short of ‘fucking cool’ at the time. Here’s that song. (and a sick video to boot)

Another night took me to Royal Park Cellars – a TINY little crawlspace basement beneath the namesake pub. And THAT’S where I found these guys lurking around.

—————————————————————————

I had the good fortune to trip over some new(er) tracks posted by the bands – which was the starting block to an unproductive hour (at least I didn’t end up on cat videos like usual…). PSYCHED for rediscovering forgotten artists and their new songs which are still ace. Chekkem out Chickens.
